My UCAS place still says pending - what should I do?

Opened your UCAS Hub and it still shows your offer as conditional or pending? Don’t panic - here’s what that actually means and what to do.

A ‘pending’ or still-conditional status on results day doesn’t mean you’ve been rejected - it means the university is still deciding. It may be waiting for information (such as your results to reach it) or weighing up a near miss. Check your Hub for messages, don’t rush, and contact the university if you need clarity. Don’t decline anything or jump into Clearing while a decision is still open.

How it works

tutor2u isn’t a university or a UCAS service, and we can’t place you on a course. This is a plain-English guide to the official process - always use UCAS and speak to the universities and your school or college for anything specific to you.

  1. Check your Hub for messages
    Look for any note explaining why it’s still pending - the university may be waiting for missing information, such as your Level 3 results.
  2. Give it a little time
    Universities process huge numbers of results on the day. A status can stay conditional for a while as they work through decisions, especially for near misses.
  3. Contact the university if you’re unsure
    If you need clarity, phone or message admissions. Have your Personal ID and results to hand.
  4. Don’t self-release while pending
    Don’t use ‘Decline my place’ or commit to Clearing while your firm decision is still open - you could give up a place you were about to be given.

Example

You just missed your firm offer and your Hub still says ‘conditional’ at 09:00. That’s not a no - the university is still deciding. By late morning it updates to confirmed, because you were close and they had room. Declining or rushing into Clearing first thing would have been a mistake.
Common misconception

Pending isn’t rejection. A conditional status simply means the decision hasn’t been finalised yet - it can change to confirmed later the same day, particularly if you only narrowly missed.

Does pending mean I’ve failed to get in?
