In short

GCSE Maths and English Language are offered in the November 2026 series. For AQA, the papers run from Tuesday 3 November to Monday 9 November 2026, and results are issued in January 2027. Other GCSE subjects aren’t in the November series - they’re retaken the following summer. Exact dates are similar across boards; always confirm with your centre and board.

How it works

This is a plain-English guide to what happens after GCSE results in England, based on the government’s 16–19 funding rules and the exam boards’ resit arrangements. For the decision that applies to you, talk to your school, sixth form or college - they enter you for exams and know your programme.

You must be entered by your school or college (or an exam centre, if you’re a private candidate) ahead of the board’s entry deadline, which typically falls in early October. Other subjects - including English Literature - are retaken in the next summer series (June 2027), with results in August.

Example

You want to retake maths after a grade 3. Your college enters you in September, you sit AQA Papers 1–3 on 4, 6 and 9 November 2026, and you get your new grade in January 2027 - in time to confirm your progression for the rest of the year.
Common misconception

Only maths and English Language have a November sitting - so if you were hoping to retake, say, science or a language this autumn, you’ll normally wait until next summer. And ‘English’ in November means English Language, not Literature.
